This easy recipe makes crispy, additive-free crackers that are great as snacks whether served with sweet or savory spreads. You won’t have to worry about strange additives or excessive salt content in store-bought items anymore.

Why You’ll Love These Spicy Tortilla Crackers

  • Healthier version. When it comes to store-bought chips and crackers, they’re full of toxic ingredients such as highly refined oils, additives, and preservatives. But, believe me, you’ll get almost the same delectable taste when you make these mouth-watering spicy crackers! They are such a cheap and simple homemade recipe that is crisp, salty, and moderately spicy! You can make your own adjustments in salt, spiciness, and other seasonings to fit your taste!
  • Only 7 simple ingredients/15-20 minutes for preparation. In order to make these spicy Tortilla Crackers you’ll need only 7 pantry ingredients and 15-20 minutes of your time! You’ll need corn flour, white whole wheat (or 100% whole wheat) flour, sesame seeds, neutral-tasting high-quality oil, organic lard or melted butter, sea salt, cayenne pepper/chili powder, and filtered water. Also, the whole process is easy, maybeee except for the part where you have to roll the dough with the rolling pin, but again, nothing super hard! Don’t worry!
  • Awesome for dipping. This recipe may be used to make a delicious, basic cracker that goes well with a variety of toppings or a herb cracker that tastes fantastic by itself!
  • Crispy & SPICY! The spiciness that chili powder or Cayenne pepper provides is what gives these Tortillas/Crackers an authentic taste and vibe! However, if you don’t like much spiciness, you can adjust to your taste!

Ingredients You Need

Corn flour – Don’t confuse corn flour with cornmeal, since cornmeal has a grittier texture due to its coarser grinding. Corn flour has a finer, flourier texture and is milled more finely. Cornmeal, especially coarse-ground cornmeal, is extremely similar to polenta.

Whole wheat flour – You don’t strictly have to use 100% whole wheat flour, you can also use white whole wheat, all-purpose, or even experiment with nut and gluten-free flour. I haven’t tested with other than the whole wheat so I can’t give you the guarantees and the precise measurements since all the flours (even by brand) are differentiated by weight and other factors.

Neutral-tasting oil/Lard/Melted Butter – Since I rarely use oils because I can’t seem to find the right not-so-much-refined neutral-tasting oil, I prefer to stick to organic lard or butter. All three have the same job, to combine the flour into a buttery mixture and give moisture to the tortillas. If you’re using butter or lard, make sure to melt them beforehand.

Sesame seeds – Nothing without some sesame seeds for the additional flavor!

Cayenne pepper/Chilli powder – Used to make tortillas super spicy and give them a vibrant red color!

Spicy Tortilla Crackers Variations

  • Experiment with different flours. You can use 100% whole wheat like I did, or try with the white whole wheat, all-purpose flour, or other nut, gluten-free flour. Keep in mind that all these flours have different weights and absorbing capacities so you may need more or less of it.
  • Stir in the cheese! These would make fantastic cheese crackers with a small amount of your preferred shredded cheese.
  • Add dried herbs. Dried herbs would make wonderful additions; try adding basil, oregano, or thyme.
  • Adjust the spiciness. You may or may not strictly put recipe measurements of seasonings, but rather feel free to adjust to your preferences!

How To Make

Step 1: Gather and place all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Season with additional seasonings of choice if preferred. Stir well with a spatula until all ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 2: Start kneading the dough with your hands into a ball until you see that all the flour is no longer visible and that the dough is not falling apart. However, if the dough seems crumbly, just add more fat (oil/lard/melted butter) and continue kneading.

Step 3: Preheat the oven to 356 F (180 C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Transfer the dough onto the table (drizzled with some flour beforehand to prevent sticking) and using a rolling pin start rolling out the dough into a large rectangle (about 1/8 inch (3 mm) thick. The thinner the dough, the crunchier the tortillas will be.

Step 4: With a knife cut the triangle/rhomboid-shaped tortillas (just like the picture below) and carefully slide the tortillas onto the baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake for 15-25 minutes checking occasionally for them not to overbake (it happened to me the first time, so be careful!).

How to Keep Handmade Crackers Fresh

The ideal way to preserve crackers is in an airtight container. Place them in a plastic storage jar and they will keep for approximately a week.
